ROCHESTER, NY (January 22, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore forward Ashley Horton-pictured (Akron, OH) recorded team highs in points (17) and rebounds (nine) this evening as the Spartans lost to the University of Rochester 73-55 at the Palestra in New York .
Case falls to 2-3 in the University Athletic Association and 9-7 overall and Rochester improves to 4-1 and 13-3. The Spartans will travel to Boston and face Brandeis University Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
Case jumped out to an eight point lead at the 13:36 mark, allowing Rochester to just score five points (13-5) in the first six plus minutes of the game. The Spartans would not trail the Yellowjackets until the 7:43 mark when two fouls shots and a junior guard Danielle Muller (Melville, NY) lay-up put Rochester up by four (22-18). The home team increased their lead to seven (34-27) just before the intermission with another Muller lay-up. She finished the half with 11 points and led all scorers in the game with 25.
The Yellowjackets started off the second half with an 11-1 run, jumping out to a 45-29 lead on a junior guard Emil Bango (Delmar, NY) jump shot at 15:38. From there, Rochester would not allow Case, who shot just 35.2 percent from the field in the game, within 12 points on the way to their fifth straight win. The Yellowjackets out rebounded Case, who turned the ball over 26 times in the contest, 25-16 in the last 20 minutes and 46-39 in the game.
Senior guard Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV) added 10 points for the Spartans and freshman forward Alex Porter (Rockville, MD) recorded a game high 12 rebounds for Rochester.
