WOMEN'S BASKETBALL—2005-06

Case improves to 2-2 in the University Athletic Association and 9-6 overall. Carnegie Mellon drops to 5-10 and 0-4. The Spartans travel to New York on Sunday to face the University of Rochester at 3:00 p.m.

Both teams started off slow, combining for only 11 points (Case 7-4) in the first five minutes of the game. The Spartans then went on a 7-0 run and jumped out to a 10-point advantage, 14-4 at the 12:26 mark. Hammell led all scorers in the first half with eight points and sophomore forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) grabbed nine rebounds as Case pushed their lead to 14 (33-19) by the intermission. Horton finished the night with a season and game high 15 rebounds.

The Spartans pushed their lead to 19, 47-28 five minutes (14:22) into the second half, but Carnegie Mellon battled back. The Tartans brought it within 11 (58-47) with just five minutes (5:02) remaining in the game, but couldn't get any closer, picking up their fifth loss in six games. Case sophomore guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) led her team in the last 20 minutes with eight of her game total 12 points. The Spartans out rebounded the Tartans 20-13 in the half and 42-26 on the night.

Sophomore guard Leah Feola (Pittsburgh, PA) led two Carnegie Mellon players in double digits with 12 points. Both teams shot below 40 percent from the field (Case 38.6%, CMU 37.3%) in the contest and turned the all over 20-plus times (Case 23, CMU 25).
