CLEVELAND, OH (January 13, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University senior guard Amber Hammell-pictured (Parkersburg, WV) scored a game high 18 points this evening as the Spartans were defeated by the University of Chicago 62-70 in Horsburgh Gymnasium in the Veale Center. Chicago entered the game ranked 20th in the country (Division III) .
Case, who falls to 1-1 in the UAA and 8-5 overall, will host Washington University (MO) on Sunday in Veale Center at 3:00 p.m. Washington is currently ranked 4th in the nation. Chicago improves to 1-1 in the UAA and 12-1overall.
The Spartans used the three-pointer in the first half to take a 42-26 advantage into the intermission. Case hit 8-of-16 (50%) shots from behind the arch with junior guard Dana Dempsey leading the way. Dempsey connected on 4-of-8 and was 5-of-10 from the field for a team high 14 points. The Maroons shot just 25 percent (8-of-32) from the field and were out rebounded by Case 23-20.
The Spartans led by 10 points with just 5:15 left in the game, but Chicago sophomore guard Nofi Mojidi (Silver Springs, MD) ended a 11-0 Maroon run with a lay-up at the 2:37 mark to give them their first lead of the second half 63-62. Mojidi finished the game with a team high 17 points. The Maroons shot a stellar 59.3% from the floor as they connected on 16 of their 27 shots. Case cooled off to 29% as they hit 9 of 31 shots from the field including 0-8 behind the arc. The Maroons also forced 18 Spartan turnovers in the second half en route to the victory
Chicago junior guard Korry Schwanz (Menominee, MI) added 12 points. Case sophomore guard Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) added nine points off the bench for the Spartans.
