CASE 73, BLUFFTON 64...
BLUFFTON, OH (December 28, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University senior guard Amber Hammell-pictured (Parkersburg, WV) scored a team-high 18 points and Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) recorded her sixth double-double of the season as the Spartans defeated the Bluffton College Beavers 73-64 this evening .
With the victory, Case improves to 5-3 on the year while the Beavers fall to 2-8 with their sixth straight loss.
Case didn't show any signs of rust after a 21-day layoff as they jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first 5:20 of action. Bluffton however battled back to draw within four points to trail 31-27 at halftime. Junior guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) led the Spartans with eight points in the first half while Bluffton's Tanya Rickenberg (Defiance, OH) and Ashleigh Stallkamp (Paulding, OH) each scored nine points. Dempsey finished the game with 14 points. Stallkamp had a game-high 19 points while Rickenberg ended up with 18 points for the Beavers.
The second half saw the lead change six times with Case taking the lead for good on a Hammell layup to make the score 59-58 with 3:29 to play. The Spartans then out-scored the Beavers 14-6 over the final minutes to secure the victory. Hammell scored six of the final 14 points for the Spartans. She also finished the game 10 of 13 from the free throw line.
Horton had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for Case while Maria Jackson (Middlefield, OH) added 12 points in the winning effort.
Case returns to action on Friday night when they host Muskingum College in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
