GROVE CITY 64, CASE 60 ...
GROVE CITY, PA (December 2, 2005) - The Case Western Reserve women's basketball team shot just 28.6% from the field as they fell to Grove City College 64-60 this evening in Grove City, Pennsylvania. With the loss, the Case Spartans move to 3-2 overall while losing their second straight game. Meanwhile the Wolverines improved to 2-3 on the season behind a 41.1% shooting percentage .
Case fell behind early in the first half as they struggled shooting the ball. The Spartans were just 10 for 38 (26.3%) from the field in the first period and made just two three-pointers on 11 attempts. Grove City meanwhile shot 41.4% (12-29) and led Case 34-28 at halftime. Rachel McCoy had the hot-hand for the Wolverines in the first half with 13 points.
The Spartans battled back in the second half after trailing by six points with just 1:35 to play in the game. Spartan junior Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) led the Case charge with 10 second half points and finished with 17 in the game. The Spartans cut the Wolverine lead to just one point, 61-60, as Kristina Kleinert (Louisville, KY) drained both her free throws with 40 seconds remaining.
However that would be as close as Case would get in the contest. Grove City's Rachel McCoy and Shannon Overdorff combined for three free throws down the stretch to seal the 64-60 victory for the Wolverines. McCoy and Overdorff both finished with game-highs of 19 points apiece, while McCoy recorded a double-double adding 13 rebounds.
Case finished the game with three players in double digits in scoring. Sophomore Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) added 15 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double. Meanwhile Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV) scored 11 points and Dempsey had a team-high with 17 to round out the Case leaders.
The Spartans will seek to snap their two-game losing streak when they travel to Westminster College for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off tomorrow afternoon.
