BALDWIN WALLACE 61, CASE 58...
CLEVELAND, OH (November 29, 2005) - Spartan sophomore forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH - pictured) recorded her third straight double-double but it wasn't enough as Baldwin Wallace squeaked by Case 61-58 this evening in the Veale Center. The Yellow Jackets, ranked 20th in the nation, stayed undefeated at 4-0 while the Spartans lost their first game of the year to move to 3-1 in the early-going .
The first half was evenly played as Baldwin Wallace led Case 28-26 at halftime. Both teams took 27 shots in the first period, with the Yellow Jackets making one more field goal than the Spartans. Baldwin Wallace shot 33.3% (9-27) while Case was 8-27 (29.6%) in the first half. Horton led all scorers in the first period with seven points, while finishing the game with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Baldwin Wallace picked up the pace in the second half and built their lead to 10 points, as the score was 53-43 with 5:21 remaining in the game. With the Spartans down 10, Case then went on a 9-0 run over the next 2:18 to close within one point at 53-52 with 3:03 left to play.
The score remained tight the remainder of the game with Case's Carmen Rowan (Richmond Heights, OH) drawing the Spartans again within one, 59-58, with 29 seconds to play. However, two Altenweg free throws brought the Yellow Jacket lead back up to three with 17 seconds left on the clock. The Baldwin Wallace defense then stiffened up and Case couldn't get a good look at the basket as time expired. The Yellow Jackets were led by three players with 10 points apiece. Nikki Altenweg (Perry, OH), Amanda Mondrach (Parma, OH), and Steffani Jaworski (Parma, OH) all finished with 10 points for Baldwin Wallace. Case junior guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) led all scorers with 15 points in the contest while senior guard Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV) finished with a game-high five assists for the Spartans.
The Spartans will hit the road this weekend for back-to-back games. Case will visit Grove City College on Friday night and will travel to Westminster College for a 3:00 p.m. afternoon tip-off Saturday.
