CASE 67, MT. UNION 50...
ERIE, PA (November 18, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University (1-0) senior guard Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV - pictured) scored a game high 21 points tonight as the Spartans opened-up their 2005-06 season with a 67-50 win over Mount Union College (0-1) at the PSU-Behrend Tip-Off Tournament.
Case hit the boards in the first half, out rebounding the Raiders 22-14 to take a 12 point advantage, 35-23, into the half. The Spartans were 14 of 32 from the field (43.8%) while Mt. Union made just 9 of 24 (37.5%).
Case, who never trailed the Raiders in the contest, continued to hit the boards in the second half, topping Mt. Union 43-38 for the game. The Raiders shooting only got worse in the last 20 minutes, making just 9 of 35 (25.7% - 30.5% for the game).
Hammell had 12 of her game high 21 in the second half and finished the game 3 of 6 from behind the three-point line and 6 of 6 from the foul line. Sophomore forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) added 11 points and freshman forward Colleen Martin (Rocky River, OH) had a team high 8 rebounds. The Raiders had two players in double digits led by Alicia Williams 12 points.
The Spartans will face PSU-Behrend tomorrow in the championship game at 4:00 p.m.
