CASE 70, EMORY 66 OT...
ATLANTA, GA (February 26, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University junior Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV) tied a game-high with 20 points, as the Spartans defeated Emory University 70-66 on the road in overtime.
The Spartans found themselves down by seven with 42 seconds left in regulation. Using two clutch three point baskets and a missed Emory free throw, Case was able to draw within two points. Spartan freshman center Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) was fouled as she hit a jumper at the buzzer to tie the game. Horton however missed the free throw which sent the game into overtime. In the overtime period, Case converted three Emory turnovers into seven points and outscored the Eagles 10-6 behind two Hammell three-pointers.
The first half foreshadowed that regulation time wouldn't be enough as the two teams found themselves tied 28-28 at halftime. The Spartans were led by 10 points and six rebounds from Horton who finished the game with a double-double on 19 points and 13 rebounds. Case outshot Emory in the first period 46.2% (12-26) to 32.3% (10-31), but it was the Spartans' 16 first-half turnovers compared to 10 for the Eagles which made the difference.
Emory built a lead late in the second half that reached as high as 11 points with 4:25 remaining. However, the Spartans battled back and were able to tie it up at the end of regulation. Senior Keesha Allen (Cleveland, OH) closed out here career as a Spartan with eight points, five assists, three rebounds, and three steals.
Case, under first year head coach Jacki Windon, finishes their season 11-13 overall, one win better than a year ago, and 6-8 in the University Athletic Association. It is the fifth straight season in which Case has finished with 10 or more wins on the season. Emory drops to 7-18 overall and 3-11 in the UAA.
