BOSTON, MA (February 20, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH), a local Brooklyn High School graduate, scored a team high 18 points this afternoon as the Spartans lost at Brandeis University, who is currently ranked 15th in the country (NCAA Division III), 67-60 in Boston.
Case falls to 9-13 overall and 3-10 in the University Athletic Association, while the Judges improve to 20-3 and 10-3 in the UAA.
Despite shooting just 38.9 percent (14-36) from the field in the first half, Case took a 43-38 lead into halftime. Dempsy connected on 6 of 10 shots from the field, 4 of 6 from behind the arc, for 16 points to lead the Spartans. Case connected on 8 of 14 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes and out rebounded the Judges 24-17.
Things got much worse for the Spartans shooting wise in the second half. Case made just 4 of 29 shots from the field (13.8%). Brandies shot 39.6 percent from the field in the contest, but was out rebounded by the Spartans 47-35. Case actually only trailed by two, 59-57, with under two minutes left in the game.
Judge freshman guard Jaime Capra (Old Bridge, NJ) led four Brandeis players in double digits with 18 points and sophomore forward Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, CT) added 15. Case freshman forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH), a local Akron Hoban product, recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game high 10 rebounds.
The Spartans face Carnegie Mellon University this Wednesday night at home at 6:00 p.m. The contest was originally scheduled for January 30, but it was postponed due to weather.
