CASE 53, CARNEGIE MELLON 47...
PITTSBURGH, PA (February 4, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University freshman forward Ashley Horton (Akron, OH), an Akron Hoban graduate, recorded the fifth double-double of her young career tonight as the Spartans defeated Carnegie Mellon University 53-47 in a University Athletic Association contest on the road. Horton finished with a game high 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Case improves to 8-9 overall under first year Head Coach Jacki Windon and 2-5 in the UAA while the Tartans fall to 4-14 and 0-7. The Spartans travel to the University of Rochester for a 3:00 p.m. game this Sunday.
The Spartans did not get off to a good start in Pittsburgh , shooting just 29.7 percent (11-37) from the field in the first half as they trailed Carnegie Mellon 23-22 at the break. Carrisa Sain led the Tartans in the first half, connecting on four of eight shots (including a three-pointer) for nine points. Case forced 15 Tartan turnovers in the first half.
Carnegie Mellon increased their lead to eight, 32-24 with just under 13 minutes (12:52) left in the game, but the Spartans battled back and took the lead for good at the 5:05 mark 42-41. Case outscored the Tartans 29-15 down the stretch to win their second straight, despite shooting just 32.0 percent from the field in the game (11-30, 36.7% - second half).
Spartan sophomore guard Dana Dempsey ( Brooklyn , OH ), a Brooklyn High product, added 13 points. Dempsey has scored in double digits in five straight games and seven of her last eight. Carnegie Mellon was led by Lisa Seacat's 14 points.
