CLEVELAND, OH (January 21, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH), a Brooklyn High product, scored a career high 21 points as the Spartans fell 71-56 to visiting Brandeis University (Boston) tonight in a University Athletic Association contest at the Veale Center.
Case falls to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the UAA while the Judges, who are currently ranked 3 rd in the nation (Division III), improve to 14-0 and 4-0.
Both teams struggled from the field in the first half. Case hit just 6 of 29 shots (20.7%) and Brandeis 10 of 29 (34.5%). The Judges however hit the boards out rebounding the Spartans 29-16 in the first 20 minutes to lead 35-17 at the intermission. Brandeis sophomore forward Caitlin Malcolm scored 16 of her game high 29 points and grabbed seven of her game high 13 rebounds in the first half.
Case, who trailed by as many as 21 in the second half, 51-30 at the 13:09 mark, brought it within ten, 59-49 with 4:27 left in the game, but continued to struggle from the field. The Spartans shot just 29.9 percent (14-38, 36.8% second half) from the field on the night and were out rebounded 46-35.
Case junior forward Carmen Rowan (Richmond Hts., OH) grabbed a team high eight rebounds. The Spartan host New York University , who are currently ranked 10 th in the country (Division III), on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
