CHICAGO 75, CASE 72 ...
CHICAGO, IL (January 16, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH) scored a team-high 17 points, but it wasn't enough as the Spartans lost to the host University of Chicago Maroons 75-72 this afternoon. With the victory, Chicago remained undefeated in University Athletic Association play at 3-0, 9-4 overall, while Case moved to 6-7 and 1-2 in the UAA.
Case jumped out to a 43-34 lead at halftime, with Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV) contributing 12 points in the first-half for the Spartans. Case shot 45% from the field in the first period, including a 6 of 16 effort from behind the three-point arc. Chicago was just 10 of 18 from the field in the first-half.
The second-half started out with more of the same for Case as they stretched their lead to as high as 19 with 14:16 remaining. Chicago then went on a 21-6 run over the next 4:39 to cut the Spartan lead to just four at 62-58. The Maroons, sparked by a 58.3% field goal percentage in the second period, took the lead at the 6:48 mark. With just a three-point lead, 75-72, Chicago was able to hold off Case over the final 1:50 to secure the victory.
Case had three players score in double-digits. Besides 17 from Dempsey, Hammell finished with 16 points and Keesha Allen (Cleveland, OH) added 10 in the losing cause. Chicago was led by Susie Gutowski with 22 points and Nicaya Rapier came off the bench to record a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Chicago had 17 turnovers compared to 11 for Case.
Case will resume play next weekend at home in the Veale center with Brandeis visiting on Friday night and New York University coming to Cleveland for a Sunday game.
