ST. LOUIS , MO (January 14, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University freshman forward Ashley Horton ( Akron , OH ) scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Spartans in their 79-51 University Athletic Association loss at Washington University in St. Louis this evening. Case falls to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in the UAA while the Bears, currently ranked 13th in the country, improve to 11-2 and 1-1.
The Spartans downfall in the first half was their shooting. Case shot just 15.6 percent (5-32) from the field and trailed 32-15 at the intermission. Washington hit 12 of 27 (44.4%) and out rebounded the Spartans 27-20.
Case shot a little better in the second half (13-34, 38.2%), but were once again out hustled on the boards 23-16 in the last 20 minutes and 50-36 in the contest. The Spartans did shoot well from the line in the game hitting 11 of 14.
Case juniors Amber Hammel ( Parkesburg , WV ) and Carmen Rowan (Richmond Hts., OH) added nine points a piece. The Bears had three players score in double digits led by Kelly Manning's 21 points.
The Spartans travel to Chicago tomorrow afternoon and then face the University of Chicago Maroons on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. (CST).
