CASE 74, GROVE CITY 64 ...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 10, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University freshman forward Ashley Horton, an Akron Hoban graduate, recorded a double-double (22 points and 11 rebounds) tonight as the Spartans defeated visiting Grove City College 74-64 in a non-conference match-up at the Veale Center.
The Spartans improve to 6-5 on the season and Grove City falls to 7-5.
Case junior guard Amber Hammell was three of five from the field in the first half, including two of three from behind the arc, scoring ten of her 21 points. The Spartans shot just 43.3 percent from the field (13-30), but forced 11 Grove City turnovers and led at the half 38-37.
Case's shooting percentage didn't get any better in the second half as they hit just 11 of 40 shots (27.5%). The Spartans however out rebounded the Wolverines 32-18 in the last 20 minutes and 47-35 in the contest. Eight of Horton's game high 11 rebounds came in the second half.
Case sophomore guard Dana Dempsey, a local Brooklyn High product, added 12 points. Grove City was led by senior center Sandy O'Keefe's 21 points. O'Keefe is a graduate of Perry High School.
The Spartans travel to St. Louis and Chicago this weekend for a University Athletic Association double-header. Case faces Washington University Friday night at 6:00 p.m. (CST) and the University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. (CST).
