KENYON 67, CASE 60 ...
GAMBIER, OH (January 4, 2005) - Case Western Reserve junior guard Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV) scored a career-high 22 points in a 67-60 loss to Kenyon College this evening in Gambier, Ohio. The defeat drops Case below .500 (4-5) for the first time this season, while the Kenyon Ladies improve to 9-2 on the year.
Case had the lead in the early-going, but Kenyon used a 21-8 run over the final 7:05 of the first half to take a 13-point lead (42-29) at halftime. Sparking Kenyon's first-half play was their scorching 6-12 shooting from three-point range, with Alisha Moreno hitting three of her four attempts from behind the arc. Moreno finished the game with 17 points to lead the Ladies in scoring.
The Spartans battled back in the second half when Mary Herendeen (Austinburg, OH) nailed a jumper with just 26 seconds remaining to cut the Kenyon lead to only four, at 63-59. However, four clutch free-throws down the stretch from the sharp-shooting Moreno sealed the victory for the Kenyon Ladies.
Case had a spectacular shooter of their own, as Hammell's game-high 22 points came on 6-8 shooting from the field and a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line. Carmen Rowan (Richmond Heights, OH) led the Spartans with seven rebounds while both Ashley Horton (Akron, OH) and Hammell added six rebounds apiece.
Case opens up University Athletic Association play this Saturday when Emory University visits Cleveland for a 3:00 p.m. game in the Veale Center.
