WOMEN'S BASKETBALL—2003

CLEVELAND, OH - Case Western Reserve University senior guard Jasmine Rowan (Richmond Heights, OH), a Hawken graduate, scored a game high 28 points as the Spartans (8-8, 4-1 UAA) defeated the University of Rochester (15-1, 4-1 UAA) in two overtimes by a score of 82-78. The Yellowjackets entered the game ranked number one in the country (D-III).

Case took the lead going into the break 30-25. Angie Zeuch (Cincinnati, OH) scored 10 of her 17 points in the opening half. Shawn Dinger (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) pulled down five rebounds in the first 20 minutes as the Spartans forced nine Yellowjacket turnovers and out rebounded Rochester 20-19.

In the second half, Case led by as many as 13 points, 52-39 at 9:36, but Rochester battled back to outscore the Spartans 20-7 and tie the game 59-59 with 3:07 left in regulation. The Yellowjacket comeback was sparked by their 50 percent (14-28) shooting effort in the half. Jasmine Rowan hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds on the clock to tie the game 63-63 and send it into the first overtime.

In the first overtime, the game was tied three times (65-65 at 3:31, 68-68 at 1:43, 70-70 at 0:58) and then a fourth and final time when Yellowjacket senior guard Erika Smith (Latham, NY) hit two free throws with ten seconds on the clock, making it 72-72, and forcing a second overtime. Smith had a team high 28 points, 24 of which came in the second half, and nine rebounds.

Jasmine Rowan accounted for 10 points in the two overtimes, six of the ten coming in the second one. Two clutch free throws by sophomore forward Andrea Haylett (Mantua, OH) with 42 seconds left put Case up 80-76 and junior guard Keesha Allen (Cleveland, OH) added two more from the line with nine clicks left to give her team the upset.

Allen finished with a double-double with 14 points and a team high 10 rebounds for the Spartans. Junior forward Kelly Wescott (Burke, NY) added 17 points and eight rebounds for Rochester.

The Spartans host Brandeis University on Friday at 6:00 pm.
