WOMEN'S BASKETBALL—2003

CLEVELAND, OH - Case Western Reserve University freshmen guard Dana Dempsey (Brooklyn, OH), a Brooklyn High School graduate, scored a game high 19 points on 8-13 shooting as the Spartans (7-8, 3-1 UAA) defeated Carnegie Mellon (3-12, 0-4 UAA) 87-53 in Horsburgh Gymnasium at the Veale Center. The win was Case's fifth in their last six tries. Dempsey also hit on three of her four attempts from behind the three point line as she led four Spartans in double figures.

Angie Zeuch (Cincinnati, OH) scored all 13 of her points in the opening half as the Spartans led 50-33 over the Tartans after the first 20 minutes. The Spartans hit 17 of their 34 shots in the opening minutes including 7 of 14 from the three point arc while Carnegie Mellon shot 46.4% (13-28) from the floor. Dava Sommermeyer had ten points in the first half for the Tartans.

Case's defense took over in the second half forcing 18 turnovers and limiting Carnegie Mellon to just 29.4% (5-17) from the floor. Dempsey scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half.

The Tartans were led by Sommermeyer with 18 points while Sara Burke pulled down six boards. Sophomore guard Shawn Dinger (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) pulled down a game high 10 rebounds for Case.

The Spartans play at home Sunday versus the University of Rochester, who is ranked number 1 in the country (D-III). Tip-off is 3:00 p.m.
