OBERLIN INVITATIONAL...
OBERLIN, OH (February 11, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University freshman Dominic Smith (New Richmond, OH) took first place in the one-mile run and second place in the 800-meter run to lead the Spartans at the Oberlin Invitational last evening. Case finished in third place as a team with 81 points while University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon won the meet with 138 points.
Smith was the story for Case as he took the top spot in the one-mile race with a time of 4:29.59. He beat out the Spartans' Tyler Youngquist (Midland, MI), who finished in second, nearly four seconds behind Smith, at 4:33.47. Smith then proceeded to claim the second place spot in the 800-meter run behind an unattached runner Joshua Kinches. Smith's time of 2:04.67 was just a hair ahead of fellow Case runner Chris Anderson (Centerville, VA) who finished third in a time of 2:04.82.
In the 200-meter dash, Spartan junior Axel Riemer (Ogdensburg, WI) took third place in 23.30, just .23 seconds behind the race winner. Case freshman Ryan Gjoraas (Plymouth, MN) also took home a third place finish with his time of 9:04.87 in the 3,000-meter run. In the field events, the Spartans took home two third place spots, one in the high jump and the other in the shot put. Freshman Derrick Moore (Cleveland, OH) cleared 5'-6" in the high jump for third place while fellow freshman Ryan Breon (Barberton, OH) took third in the shot put with his throw of 42'-3.5"
Several of the Spartans will be in action again today at the Division III All-Ohio Championships at Ohio Northern. Case will then compete next in the City Championships held at Baldwin Wallace College on Friday, February 17 at 5:30 p.m.
