CLEVELAND, OH (March 1, 2008) - Senior center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL– pictured) scored a team-high 26 points on 11-of-14 shooting, giving the Case Western Reserve University men’s basketball team a 96-93 victory over Emory University in both team’s season finale.
The Spartans finish the season 8-17 (1-13 UAA), while the Eagles finish the year with a 10-15 record (3-11 UAA).
Down 15-8 with 13:38 remaining in the first half, Conrad brought the Spartans back within striking distance, as his jumper from the top of the key made it a five point game. Minutes later, Young would pull the team within a basket, as his three-pointer made it a 21-20 game with 10:14 remaining. Freshman guard Colin Mulholland (Jacksonville, FL) gave the Spartans their first lead of the game in the final seconds, as his fast-break lay-up gave Case a 51-50 advantage at the half.
Both teams shot well from the field in the first 20 minutes, as the Spartans shot 65.5 percent, while the Eagles went 19-of-33 for 57.6 percent.
Spiros Ferderigos would bring the Eagles back, as his lay-up with under 15 minutes remaining in the game would give Emory a 67-66 advantage.
The Spartans would again battle from behind, as Mulholland’s lay-up with 5:05 remaining in the game brought the Spartans within two. A Conrad jumper and made free throw with 4:32 remaining would put the Spartans ahead, 80-79.
The two teams would go basket-for-basket in the final two minutes, but the Spartans would pull away down the stretch, as Bradford’s tip-in with 40.9 seconds remaining in the game would give the Spartans a three-point advantage.
Emory’s Anthony Fernandez finished with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while Ferderigos finished with a game-high 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting.
Junior guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO) finished with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while freshman guard Kevin Herring (Blacklick, OH) finished with 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while also making 7-of-8 shots from the charity stripe.
