MEN'S BASKETBALL—2007-08


CLEVELAND, OH (February 24, 2008) -
Case Western Reserve University freshman guard Kevin Herring (Blacklick, OH-pictured) scored a team-high 16 points as the Spartans fell 70-66 to Carnegie Mellon University this afternoon in University Athletic Association action in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Spartans (7-17, 0-13) will end the regular season at home on Saturday when they host Emory University at 12:00 p.m.

Jack Anderson gave Carnegie Mellon (16-8, 6-7 UAA) a nine-point lead, its biggest of the first half, with a jumper at 10:48 that put the Tartans up 20-11. From there, freshman guard Colin Mulholland (Jacksonville, FL) finished off a 13-6 run with a three-pointer at 4:02 that brought Case Western Reserve within two, 26-24. The Spartans shot just 32 percent from the field in the first half and were outrebounded by Carnegie Mellon, who led 29-24 at the break, 27-18.

Corey O’Rourke hit two early three-pointers in the second half, the second one at 18:24, putting the Tartans up by 11, 37-26. Two more long balls, this time by Ryan Einwag [16:47] and Geoff Kozak, put Carnegie Mellon up by 14, 45-31, with 15:10 left. Case Western Reserve cut the lead to three five times in the last five minutes, the last time with 49 seconds remaining on a jumper by freshman center Eric Duerr (Gibsonia, PA) that made it 67-64, but the Tartans hung on.

Carnegie Mellon had four players in double figures led by Einwag’s 16 and Greg Gonzalez had a game-high 21 rebounds. Spartan freshman center Eric Duerr had a game- and career-high six blocks and added 12 points, while senior guard Brandon Bradford scored 15.
