MEN'S BASKETBALL—2007-08


CLEVELAND, OH (February 15, 2008) -
The Case Western Reserve University men’s basketball team nearly pulled its biggest upset of the season tonight in Adelbert Gymnasium, but Troy Ruths and No. 7 ranked Washington University (Mo.) proved to be too much down the stretch, as the Bears came away with a 71-68 victory over the Spartans in a University Athletic Association contest.

The Spartans will be in action again on Sunday when they take on the Maroons from the University of Chicago in game two of Throwback Weekend. Tip is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans (7-13, 0-9 UAA) came out firing, as four three-pointers in the first eight minutes gave Case a 19-9 advantage with 12:40 remaining. The Bears (17-4, 8-2 UAA) would answer, as Tyler Nading’s three-pointer with 8:15 remaining limited Case’s lead to two (24-22).

The Spartans shot 55.2 percent in the first 20 minutes, including 8-of-14 from beyond the arc, en route to a 41-32 lead.

The Spartans would continue to nail shots from long distance, as Young’s three-pointer with 16:27 remaining gave Case a 47-36 advantage. He split a pair of free throws with 13:04 remaining to keep Case ahead, 50-45.

Freshman guard Colin Mullholland (Jacksonville, FL– pictured) continued his onslaught from long distance, as he drilled his fourth three-pointer of the game 11:37 remaining to force a Washington timeout, extending the Case lead to nine. Mullholland finished with a career-high 17 points, including five three-pointers.

Washington’s Troy Ruths’ nailed four clutch free throws down the stretch to bring the Bears back, giving them a 69-68 lead with six seconds remaining.

Ruths finished with a game-high 25 points on 7-of-17 shooting, while Nading finished with 19 points on 9-of-17 shooting.

Young finished with a team-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting, as the Spartans shot 43.3 percent in the game.
