NYU 64, CASE 54...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 8, 2008) - Case Western Reserve University junior guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO-pictured) posted his 15th double figure performance of the season tonight as the Spartans fell to the Violets of New York University 64-54 in New York City.
The Spartans (7-12, 0-8 UAA) travel to Boston Sunday to face No. 10 Brandeis University in another UAA contest at 12:00 p.m.
Young finished with a team-high 16 points and freshman guard Kevin Herring (Blacklick, OH) added 11 points. Keith Jensen led four Violets (11-8, 4-4 UAA) in double figures with 16 points.
After NYU jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, Young put Case Western Reserve up 11-6 at 14:32 with three-pointer and layup. The Spartans held the advantage until 7:23 when a layup by Derek Becker put the Violets up 18-17. The lead would change six times until NYU’s Charlie Parker hit consecutive buckets with under two minutes remaining in the half, including a three-pointer with 47 seconds left that help the Violets take a 29-27 advantage into the break. Young led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 11 points.
Case Western Reserve tied the game twice early in the second half and NYU’s lead would be get no larger than five points until a Zachary Kuba three-pointer put the Violets up 44-37 at 9:13. The Spartans cut it to two [44-42] with 6:32 remaining, but consecutive NYU three-pointers at 5:09 and with 4:26 remaining squashed their attempt at snapping a nine-game losing streak. Case Western Reserve shot just 32 percent [23 percent in the second half] from the field and seven percent [0-7 in the second half] from long distance in the game.
