#1 ROCHESTER 85, CASE 74...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 27, 2008) - Junior guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO – pictured) scored a game and season-high 26 points and was 6-of-13 from beyond the arc, as the Case Western Reserve University men’s basketball team fell, 85-74, to the No. 1 ranked Yellowjackets from the University of Rochester in a University Athletic Association contest at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The two teams went basket-for-basket throughout the first half of play, with senior guard Brandon Bradford (Detroit, MI) leading the Spartans with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Bradford finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Freshman guard Kevin Herring (Blacklick, OH) drilled a three-pointer with 2:10 remaining in the half to tie the game at 27-apiece. Rochester’s Onyiriuka led the Yellowjackets with 10 points at intermission, as the Yellowjackets had a 33-29 lead.
In the first half of play, the Spartans (7-9, 0-5 UAA) and the Yellowjackets were identical from the field, as each team shot 44.8 percent (13-of-29).
The Spartans came within a basket early on the first half, as Herring’s baseline lay-up with 15:24 remaining limited Rochester’s lead to 37-35. The Spartans managed to tie the game with 13:36 remaining, as freshman Alex Hildebrant’s (Fairlawn, OH) fast-break lay-up knotted the game at 39-apiece.
The Spartans would mount a comeback late in the game, as Young drilled three three-pointers in the final nine minutes to pull Case Western Reserve within five points. But it wouldn’t be enough, as the Yellowjackets would seal the win down the stretch, putting them at 15-1 overall and 4-1 in the UAA.
Rochester had four players in double-figures, with Michael Chmielowiec leading the way with 23 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field.
The Spartans shot 47.4 percent from the field in the game, and made 12-of-16 shots from the free-throw line. Herring finished with 18 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
The Spartans will continue conference play on Feb. 1 when they take on the No. 2 ranked Judges from Brandeis University. The game will be the first-annual Hawaiian Night at Case Western Reserve, with the men’s game scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
