CARNEGIE MELLON 86, CASE 72...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 25, 2008) - Senior Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL – pictured) scored a team-high 22 points and notched his fourth double-double this season, as the Case Western Reserve University men’s basketball team lost to the Tartans (11-4, 1-3 UAA) from Carnegie Mellon University, 86-72, in a University Athletic Association contest at Horsburgh Gymnasium.
Despite shooting only 35.3 percent (12-of-34) from the field in the first 20 minutes, the Spartans (7-8, 0-4 UAA) managed to stay within striking distance, down only eight points at the half. Junior guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO) led Case Western Reserve with 10 points at intermission, including a three-pointer in the final seconds to pull the Spartans within eight. Carnegie Mellon’s Greg Gonzalez had a game-high 15 points at the half on 6-of-9 shooting. The Tartans shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field in the first half.
The Spartans pulled within five with a pair of Rob Skuski (Russell, OH) lay-ups, before Young’s three-pointer with 16:05 remaining put his team within a basket. However, the Tartans would go up by as many as 14 points in the second half, as Ryan Einwag three three-pointers would give his team a 14 point lead with 11:20 remaining.
Einwag finished with a game-high 30 points, while Gonzalez was right behind, adding 25 points for the Tartans.
The Spartans shot 37.3 percent from the field (25-of-67) and 43.8 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-16).
The Spartans will continue conference play on Sunday when they take on the No. 1 ranked Yellow Jackets from the University of Rochester. Tip is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. in Horsburgh Gymnasium.
