CLEVELAND, OH (January 18, 2008) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO-pictured) had a team-high 20 points as the Spartans fell, 76-65, tonight at the University of Chicago in a University Athletic Association game. Young was five-of-ten from long distance. The Spartans travel to St. Louis Sunday to face No. 5 Washington University at 12:00 p.m. (CST).
Young gave Case Western Reserve (7-6, 0-2 UAA) its only lead of the game, 8-7, when he hit a three-pointer with 17:21 left in the first half. Chicago (8-5, 1-1 UAA) then went on a 10-0 run and took a 17-8 lead on a three-pointer by sophomore guard John Bonelli at 10:58. The Spartans, who shot just 26.7 percent from the field and had 10 turnovers in the half, cut the lead to three with 5:49 on the clock, but trailed the Maroons 33-22 at the intermission.
Case Western Reserve cut Chicago’s lead to under five three times in the second half, but did not get any closer. The Maroons, who were edged by the Spartans in rebounding 37-35, took their biggest lead [18 points, 69-51] of the game with 4:04 left when junior guard Matt Corning hit a shot from long distance. Corning finished with a game-high 22 points.
Spartan junior forward Brad Sutton (Findlay, OH) double-doubled with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
NOTE … Case Western Reserve senior guard Brandon Bradford (Detroit, MI) moved into the second position on the all-time assists’ list tonight in Chicago. Jim Fox is the leader with 403. Bradford entered the game in a tie [292] with Ken Jackson. His six against the Maroons gives him 298.
