EMORY 99, CASE 92...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 12, 2008) - Case Western Reserve University junior forward Brad Sutton (Findlay, OH-pictured) led four Spartan players in double figures with a game-high 26 points in a 99-92 University Athletic Association (UAA) loss at Emory University.
Case Western Reserve will embark on its first UAA double-header weekend this week. The Spartans will be at the University of Chicago on Friday (8:00 p.m. CST) and then face No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday (12:00 p.m. CST).
Sophomore forward Anthony Fernandez put Emory (8-4, 1-0 UAA) up by ten, 12-2, with a lay-up at the 17:22 mark in the first half. Fernandez then gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the half, 49-32, on another lay-up with 3:05 remaining. The Spartans cut the deficit to 11 at intermission, as freshman guard Colin Mulholland (Jacksonville, FL) scored four-point play with under a minute left. Fernandez had nine first half points as Emory shot 56.7 percent from the field. Mulholland finished with a career-high 16 points.
Case Western Reserve (7-5, 0-1 UAA) used the long distance shot to battle back in the second half. Sutton hit five of his game-high six [6-of-10] three-pointers in the first 15 minutes of the half, allowing junior center Rob Skuski (Russell, OH) to give the Spartans their first lead of the game, 87-86, with two free throws with 2:23 remaining. After three lead changes, Emory forced a key turn over and made eight-of-eight free throws down the stretch to secure the UAA opener victory.
Senior guard Brandon Bradford (Detroit, MI) nearly triple-doubled, scoring 15 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out eight assists. Four Eagle players scored in double figures, led by senior guard Spiros Ferderigos and sophomore forward Anthony Fernandez, who each had 19.
