#11 WASHINGTON 86, CASE 65...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 11, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University had no answer today for the hot shooting of 11th-ranked Washington University, as the Spartans lost to the host Bears, 86-65, in a men’s University Athletic Association basketball game at St. Louis.
The Spartans (4-18, 0-11 UAA) started the game with an 8-0 run, including three-pointers by Steve Young (St. Louis, MO-pictured) and Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH). After a timeout, Washington (18-3, 9-2 UAA) took control of the game with a 10-0 run of its own. The Bears continued to build their lead throughout the remainder of the first half, with Case trailing 47-23 at intermission. The Spartans shot just 34.6 percent from the floor in the first half and were led by Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL) and his six points. The Bears shot 57.6 percent during the half while making seven of their 15 attempts from behind the three-point arc.
Washington did not let up in the second half, increasing its lead to 72-42 at the 11:26 mark. Steve Young provided a shooting threat from the outside for Case in the second half, scoring 17 of his game-high 22 points in the final period. But it was not enough to overcome the powerful Bears’ offense, which was led by Troy Ruths and his 16 points.
Case shot 40.9 percent from the field in the loss. Rob Skuski (Russell, OH) led the Spartans with seven rebounds, and Brandon Bradford (Detroit, MI) had a team-high seven assists. The Bears shot a staggering 60.3 percent during the game.
The Spartans will next be in action this Friday when they return home to play New York University at 8 p.m.
