ROCHESTER 67 , CASE 56...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 4, 2007) - Not even 37 combined points from junior guard Brandon Bradford (Detroit, MI - pictured) and junior center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL) could spare Case Western Reserve University from a home loss (67-56) this afternoon to the University of Rochester. The Spartans donned brown Case Institute of Technology (Rough Riders) uniforms for today’s game at Adelbert Gymnasium as part of Throwback Weekend.
The first half was a close battle with eight lead changes. A layup from Bradford gave Case (4-16, 0-9 UAA) its biggest lead of the half, 6-2, at the 17:26 mark. The Spartans lost the lead, then got it back at 7:16, when junior center Rob Skuski’s (Russell, OH) jumper made it 19-18. Yellowjackets sophomore forward Michael Chmielowiec made a layup with 3:04 left to give Rochester (15-5, 6-3) its biggest lead of the half, 28-23. Following two made free throws by Conrad, Yellowjackets junior center Jon Onyiriuka connected on a jumper to give Rochester a 30-29 lead going into halftime.
Rochester spent the entire second half padding its lead, a lead it never relinquished to Case. Two made free throws by Yellowjackets senior center Eric Snider gave Rochester its biggest lead of the game, 48-35, at the 11:09 mark. When the clock read 4:43, the Spartans came within six points of the lead on Conrad’s jumper. Bradford made a free throw shot at 1:11 to keep the deficit at six, but Rochester put the game away in the final 71 seconds.
Conrad had a game-high 21 points. Bradford added 16 points and five assists. Onyiriuka had a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with his 15 points. Case will travel to the University of Chicago Friday for an 8:00 p.m. (CST) game.
UNBELIEVABLE … Case Western Reserve University freshman Paul Manglona, from Guam, made good on the university’s first-ever “Shot for A Semester’s Tuition” promotion during Throwback Weekend at old Adelbert Gymnasium. Manglona sank one (nothing but net) from half court (47 feet) to win $17,000 dollars worth of schooling at Case. “When I first saw the flyer, I told my friends I felt good about winning it and that I knew I was going to get picked,” Manglona said. “Once I did get picked, I really knew I was going to make it.” Manglona’s name/ticket was pulled out of a ballot box full of students’ names.
