CARNEGIE MELLON 70, CASE 68...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 2, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University lost a heart-breaker to Carnegie Mellon University, 70-68, at Adelbert Gymnasium in University Athletic Association play. The Spartans donned maroon Western Reserve University uniforms for tonight’s game as part of Throwback Weekend.
Case (4-15, 0-8 UAA) started the game with a 7-0 run, culminating with a layup by sophomore guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO - pictured) at 17:46. With 12:37 left, Young scored another layup to give the Spartans their largest lead of the first half, 19-10. Carnegie Mellon (12-6, 5-3 UAA) freshman forward Dan Sawl’s only two points of the half were huge, as they finished off a 13-4 Tartans run, tying the game at 23. Freshman guard Jack Anderson moved the Tartans’ lead to five, when he connected from three-point range at the 3:18 mark. Carnegie Mellon was accurate on 40% of its three-pointers in the half and held a 32-27 lead at halftime.
Both teams committed 34 combined fouls in a close second half filled with many lead changes. Young made two free throws to give Case the lead back, 37-34, at the 17:53 mark. A Dan Sawl three-pointer took the lead away from Case, 47-46, at 12:19. Senior guard Brandon Bradford’s (Detroit, MI) two missed free throws with 56 seconds left was the beginning of Case’s end. With ten seconds left, Tartans junior guard Geoff Kozak hit a three-pointer to give Carnegie Mellon its 70-68 lead. Following two Case timeouts, Bradford drove into the lane, but failed to connect on his layup as time expired.
Young finished with a game-high 24 points. Senior forward Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH) had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior center Rob Skuski (Russell, OH) added four points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Corey O’Rourke led the Tartans with 15 points .
The Spartans will host the University of Rochester on Sunday in Adelbert Gymnasium at 12:00 p.m.
