CARNEGIE MELLON 58, CASE 53...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 28, 2007) - Junior center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL-pictured) scored his 800th career point (808) in Case Western Reserve University’s 53-58 loss at Carnegie Mellon University this afternoon. Conrad recorded a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds) in the University Athletic Association game.
Carnegie Mellon (11-6, 4-3) hit four straight baskets, sophomore center Rob Pearson accounted for three of them, before Conrad hit a pair of free throws at 15:23 to make it 8-2. Junior center Rob Skuski (Russell, OH) hit a jumper at 12:05 to finish off a 6-2 run and bring the Spartans (4-14, 0-7) within two, 10-8. The Tartans pushed ahead, 26-16, with 2:44 left in the half, but Skuski hit a jumper and two free throws in the remaining minutes to bring Case within four, 26-22, at the intermission. The Spartans out-rebounded Carnegie Mellon 26-12 in the first half and 44-28 in the game. Skuski finished the game with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Conrad tied the game at 26 with a layup at the 18:52 mark in the second half, but four minutes later Pearson ended a 13-0 Tartan run with a jumper. Case, down 39-26, battled back. Sophomore guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO) made it a one-point game, 50-49, with a layup (3:54) and two foul shots (3:05) with three minutes left in the game. Young struck again with 1:30 left, hitting a three-pointer that tied the game at 52. Conrad gave Case its first lead of the game, 53-52, on a free throw with 58 seconds remaining. After Carnegie Mellon hit a pair of free throws with 37 seconds left, Case turn the ball over and the Tartans went four-of-four from the line to win their second straight.
Pearson had a career-high 13 points and sophomore forward Ryan Einwag had a game-high 16 points to lead Carnegie Mellon. Young added 13 points and nine rebounds for Case.
The Spartans will play the Tartans again on Friday (8:00 p.m.) in Cleveland.
