CHICAGO 69, CASE 67...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 14, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University junior center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL-pictured) led three Spartans in double figures with a game-high 21 points, but Case lost 69-67 to the University of Chicago in a University Athletic Association home game. Case will travel to Boston Friday to face Brandeis University at 8:00 p.m.
Chicago (11-3, 2-1) jumped out a 19-10 lead on a layup made by junior guard Matt Corning at the 13:17 mark and pushed its lead to 11, 25-14, at 10:04. Sophomore guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO) brought Case (4-10, 0-3) within three, 27-24, on a layup made with 4:30 left in the first half. The Maroons pushed their lead back to nine, 38-29, by the intermission on 50 percent shooting from the field.
Conrad made it a three-point game, 46-43, with a three-point play at 14:07. Case trailed 69-64 with four seconds left in the game. Junior guard Brandon Bradford (Detroit, MI) hit a three-pointer with two seconds on the clock to bring the Spartans within two, 69-67, but the Maroons were able to run the clock out on the ensuing inbounds play. Case out-rebounded Chicago 27-15 in the second half and 41-29 in the game.
Freshman guard Antwain Coward (Washington, DC) and Young added 12 and 11 points, respectively for Case. Senior guard Brandon Woodhead led the Maroons with 18 points and seven rebounds.
