EMORY 76, CASE 67...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 6, 2007) - Case Western Reserve University junior center Rob Skuski (Russell, OH-pictured) had a career-high 16 points and eight rebounds, but visiting Emory University topped the Spartans 76-67 in a University Athletic Association contest at the Veale Center.
The Eagles (7-4, 1-0) never trailed in the first half. They jumped out to an 11-0 advantage at the 15:35 mark when senior guard Alex Ford-Carther had a tip-in. Emory increased its lead to 25, 35-10, when senior center Brandon Rowlett hit a jumper at 6:36. Case (4-8, 0-1) battled back, outscoring the Eagles 18-5 to only trail 40-28 at the intermission. Freshman forward Steve Martin (Bedford, OH) had eight points and five rebounds for the Spartans in the first 20 minutes.
Case continued to chip away at Emory’s lead in the second half. Skuski tied the game for the first time, 52-52, on a jumper made at the 9:58 mark. The Spartans would tie the game three more times, including 58-58 at 5:33, but the Eagles outscored them 18-9 in the last five minutes to win both team’s UAA opener.
Junior guard Spiros Ferderigos led Emory, who shot just 27.3 percent from the field in the second half, with a game-high 25 points. Case junior guard Brandon Bradford (Detroit, MI) added 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The Spartans out-rebounded the Eagles 41-37, but turned the ball over 21 times.
Case will host Washington University (MO) on Friday at 8:00 p.m.
