ILLINOIS 60, CASE 57...
CLEVELAND, OH (December 29, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University junior center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL-pictured) scored a team-high 17 points in a 60-57 loss to Illinois College in game two of the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament at Case. The Spartans will face Juniata College in the consolation game tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
Case (3-6) was tied with Illinois (4-3) 28-28 at the end of the first half despite shooting 29.7 percent from the field. After a 8-8 tie at the 13:49 mark, senior guard Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH) finished off a 18-9 run with a three-pointer with just over five minutes (5:19) left to give the Spartans a 26-17 lead. Cannan finished the game with 11 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Brad Johnson then finished off a Blueboys’ 11-2 run with a three-pointer to end the half. Illinois turned the ball over 16 times (24 total) in the first 20 minutes, but out-rebounded Case 25-20 (47-45 for the game).
The Spartans controlled the entire second half until the end. Junior guard Brandon Bradford (Detroit, MI) gave Case a 30-28 lead with a jumper less than one minute (19:32) into the half and Conrad increased the advantage to 11, 47-36, with a layup at the 6:43 mark. Illinois freshman guard David Stewart tied the game at 57-57 by ending a 21-10 run with a layup with four seconds left in the game. The Spartans then turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds pass and were hit with a technical foul on the Illinois inbounds pass. Sophomore guard Mark Gillingham hit the two foul shots (technical) to ensure the Blueboys’ fourth win the season.
GAME ONE … Defiance College defeated Juniata College 79-56. Sophomore center Anthony Pettaway paced Defiance with a game-high 17 points, while junior forward Brian Cannon led Juniata with 13 points. Defiance shot 57.4 percent from the field and out-rebounded Juniata 31-24 in the contest. Defiance will face Illinois in the championship game tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
