CASE 71, IIT 69...
CLEVELAND, OH (December 10, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University senior forward Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH-pictured) and junior center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL) scored 14 points apiece as the Spartans defeated Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), 71-69, today in the consolation game of the Engineers Classic hosted by the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Case (3-5) jumped out to a 9-0 lead when freshman forward Steve Martin (Bedford, OH) hit a jump shot at the 15:54 mark. Junior center Rob Skuski (Russell, OH) increased the lead to 14 points, 21-7, with a jumper at 9:02. Skuski finished the game with 10 points. IIT (2-9) cut the lead back down to six points, 27-21, on a Jeremy Nixon jumper with 2:10 left in the half. Case led 28-21 at the break.
Conrad gave the Spartans, who never trailed in the contest, a ten-point second half lead, 33-23, with a layup at the 17:18 mark. The Scarlet Hawks brought it to within one point, 48-47, on a Nixon three-point field goal at the 7:01 mark. Nixon scored a game-high 21 points. IIT would come a point away from tying the game two more times, but Case hung on to a five-point lead with less than 20 seconds left to snap a two-game losing streak.
Sophomore guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, added 11 points for the Spartans. Case will host the second annual Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament, December 29-30, at Horsburgh Gymnasium in the Veale Center.
