WPI 83, CASE 72...
CLEVELAND, OH (December 9, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University junior center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL) scored a team-high 23 points in an 83-72 loss to Worcester Polytechnic Institute at the second annual Engineers Classic hosted by the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). The Spartans will face the loser of the MSOE and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) contest in the consolation game tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
WPI’s (7-1) biggest lead of the first half was 20-13 at the 10:59 mark when senior guard Ryan Cain hit a shot from behind the arc. Cain finished with three three-point field goals and a game-high 27 points. Case (2-5) then went on a 7-0 run and tied the game, 20-20, on two free throws at the 9:19 mark by junior center Mason Conrad. Conrad had 17 points in the first half. The score was tied three times before the Engineers took a 37-35 lead into the intermission.
The Spartans, who shot 63.6 percent from the field in the last 20 minutes, jumped out to a five-point lead, 50-45, early in the second half when sophomore guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO-pictured) hit a three-pointer at the 14:55 mark. Young finished the game with 22 points. WPI sophomore guard Jerome Kirkland tied the game, 59-59, on a layup with 7:32 left. The Engineers would out-score Case, 24-13, from that point to secure their fifth straight victory.
Case junior guard Brandon Bradford (Detroit, MI) scored 13 points, handed out seven assists and recorded three steals.
