CLEVELAND, OH (November 22, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Steve Young-pictured (St. Louis, MO) scored a game-high 24 points as the Spartans defeated Hiram College 76-74 tonight in Hiram, Ohio. Case (1-2) will next travel to Oberlin College November 29 for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
Young hit a three-point field goal at the 6:17 mark to give the Spartans their biggest lead of the first half, 33-26. Hiram (0-1) junior forward Michael McDevitt then ended the half with a tip-in to finish off a 13-5 Terrier run and give Hiram a 39-38 advantage at the intermission. Young had seven points and six rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
Case junior center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL) made it a 10-point game, 70-60, with a tip-in at the 7:43 mark in the second half. Conrad finished the game with a double-double (17 points, 10 rebounds). The Terriers cut the lead to one-point, 75-74, with 1:11 left on the clock on a sophomore forward Ian Pfouts jumper, but the Spartans hung on to snap a two-game losing streak.
Young had 17 of his 24 points in the last 20 minutes. Case edged Hiram on the boards, 41-37, but turned the ball over 19 times.
