DENISON 68, ALMA 56...
CLEVELAND, OH (December 30, 2005) - Denison University junior center Dan Hodgkinson (Lake Forest, IL) scored a game high 22 points as the Big Red defeated Alma College 68-56 in the championship game of the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament (presented by the InterContinental Hotel & Conference Center) in the Veale Center at Case Western Reserve University. Denison improves to 4-8 on the year and Alma drops to 6-4.
Both teams, who were deadlocked 24-24 at the half, shot poorly from the field in the first half and turned the ball over. Alma shot just 28.1 percent (9-32) from the field and turned the ball over 10 times in the first 20 minutes while Denison shot 31.8 percent (7-22) and gave the ball up 13 times. Sophomore forward Cory Massey (Grand Rapids, MI) led Alma in the first half with 13 points and Hodgkinson led Denison with 10. Massey finished the game with a team high 21 points.
Alma continued to struggle from the field in the second half shooting just 26.5 percent (9-34), but managed to stay in the game. The Scots trailed by just three (51-48) with 4:47 left in the game, but were outscored by Denison 17-8 down the stretch. The Big Red improved their shooting, connecting on 11 of 24 (45.8%) in the last 20 minutes. Denison sophomore guard Chris Eberst (Delaware, OH) scored all of his game total 15 points in the second half.
