CLEVELAND, OH (December 29, 2005) - Denison University senior forward Robb Hern (Madeira, OH) recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds tonight as the Big Red snapped a seven game losing streak. Dension defeated the Alfred University Saxons with a 79-68 victory in game one of the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament (presented by the InterContinental Hotel & Conference Center) at Case Western Reserve University’s Veale Center.
The Big Red, who improved to 3-8 on the season, will face the winner of game two tonight (8:00 p.m.) between Case and Alma College in the championship game tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in Veale. The Consolation game is at 2:00 p.m. with Alfred, who drops to 5-4 overall, playing the loser of the second game tonight.
Despite the play of junior center Dillon Stein (N. Huntington, PA), who scored 13 points and had five rebounds in the first 20 minutes, Alfred trailed Denison by seven at the half 39-32. Denison shot 46.9 percent (15-32) from the field in the first half compared to Alfred’s 37.1 (13-35). Stein finished the night with a game high 21 points and a team-high 12 rebounds before he fouled out.
Denison maintained their lead in the second period behind the play of Hern, Dan Izzo (St. Charles, IL), and Dan Hodgkinson (Lake Forest, IL). All three players finished the game with 15 points apiece for the Big Red. Finishing with 11 points apiece was Shea McMahon (Circleville, OH) for Denison and Ryan Clemenson (Ovid, NY) and Rob McCarter (Wooster, OH) for the Saxons.
