CASE 89, EMORY 78...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 25, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University senior forward Carson Oren - pictured (South Bend, IN) ended his career this afternoon with a career high 21 rebounds and added 17 points as the Spartans defeated visiting Emory University 89-78 in both team’s season finales. Case finishes 12-13 overall and 4-10 in the UAA and the Eagles end up 11-14 and 4-10.
Oren finishes as the school’s all-time leading scorer (1,563) and rebounder (727). Three other Spartans finished in double figures today. Senior guard Richard Mullen (Columbus, OH) had 17, senior guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) 17, and sophomore center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL) 14. Lafe finishes with 1,122 career points in just three years work.
Mullen hit a three-pointer, his third of the half, at the 13:00 mark to give Case an early cushion (15-4). The Spartans shot 53.8 percent from the field (14-of-26) and out rebounded Emory 24-14 in the half (48-35 in the game), but let the Eagles back in it. Case led 29-19 with 6:25 left in the half, but Emory ended with a 17-8 run to bring it within one (37-36) at the break.
The Eagles went ahead 43-42 at the 17:40 mark in the second half on a junior guard Alex Ford-Carther (Evanston, IL) lay-up. Ford-Carther finished the game with 12 points. That proved to be Emory’s last lead as the Spartans pushed their lead to as many as 14, 76-62 with 4:23 left in the game. Case shot a whopping 68.4 percent (13-19) from the field in the second half, finishing the game at 60 percent.
Senior forward Jeff Hall (Rockville, MD) led five Eagles in double figures with 18 points.
