MEN'S BASKETBALL—2005-06

Case falls to 11-13 and 3-10 in the University Athletic Association while Carnegie Mellon improves to 19-5 and 9-4, for a share of first place in the Association. The Spartans will play their last game of the season Saturday at home against Emory University at 1:00 p.m.

The advantage for either team in the first half did not exceed four points and the score was tied nine times in the first 18 minutes of play. Carnegie Mellon made 17-of-33 shots from the field (51.5%) in the half and after a 35-35 tie with 2:09 left in the half, the Tartans finished with a 7-2 run to take a five point (42-37) lead into the break. Junior guard Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH) led Case, who out-rebounded the Tartans 23-16, with nine points and four rebounds.

Carnegie Mellon pushed their lead to nine (47-38 at 18:09) in the first two minutes of the second half, but sophomore center Conrad Mason (Tarpon Springs, FL) brought the Spartans back within two (74-71) on a lay-up with 1:12 left in the game. Mellon went 0-for-8 from the free throw line during the last 19 minutes, before senior forward Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, PA) made 4-of-6 in the last 35 second to clinch the victory for the Tartans.

Maurer ended the day with a game high 30 points and a team high nine rebounds. Senior forward Carson Oren - pictured led Case in points (18) and rebounds (8). Freshman guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO) had 14, Cannan 13, and Conrad 11 for the Spartans.
