CASE 51, ROCHESTER 43...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 17, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore center Mason Conrad - pictured (Tarpon Springs, FL) scored a game-high 16 points this evening as the Spartans knocked of the University of Rochester 51-43 in a University Athletic Association at the Veale Center. Case improves to 11-12 overall and 3-9 in the UAA while Rochester falls to 16-7 and 7-5. The Spartans host Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
After Conrad began the scoring with a lay-up in the first minute of play, Rochester went on a 21-8 run to jump out to an 11 point lead (21-10) with 4:21 left in the half. Both teams shot poorly in the half, Case just 23.3 percent (7-30) and Rochester 33.3 percent (10-30). The Yellow Jackets did hold the advantage on the boards, out-rebounding the Spartans 28-17 in the first 20 minutes. Conrad ended the half with 10 points and six rebounds as Rochester led 23-16.
Case battled back to start the second half as freshman guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO) brought his team within three, 35-32, on a three-point play with 11:22 remaining. Then two minutes (9:39) later senior guard Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) gave Case its first lead (36-35) since the opening minute with two free throws. Rochester only made 3-of-10 free throws on the night while Case hit 14-of-20 to snap a seven game losing streak. Senior guard Andrew Impastato (Freehold, NJ) finished with 10 points.
The Yellow Jackets had two players score in double figures led by sophomore center Jonathan Onyiriuka’s (Painted Post, NY) 15.
