CHICAGO, IL (February 12, 2006) - Case Western Reserve University senior guard Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) had a team high 11 points this afternoon as the Spartans fell at the University of Chicago 52-49 in a University Athletic Association contest. Case drops to 10-12 overall and 2-9 in the UAA and Chicago improves to 13-9 and 6-5. The Spartans host the University of Rochester this Friday in the Veale Center at 8:00 p.m. 
The Maroons only lead of the first half was 2-0 on a jumper by senior forward Jason Hicks (Glendale, WI) in the first minute of play (19:17). Junior guard Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH) scored on a lay-up a minute later (18:12) to put the Spartans up 4-2, a lead they kept at the half (28-24). Case, who led by as many as seven (19-12 at 7:22), out rebounded Chicago 18-11, 14 of which came on the defensive end. They also went 12-of-24 from the field (50%). Sophomore center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL) led the Spartans with six first half rebounds and finished the game with seven.
After Chicago tied the game 33-33 at 15:34 in the second half, Case freshman guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO) topped off an 8-0 run with a three-point play at 11:08 to give his team their biggest lead of the game 41-33. The Maroons then answered with a run (10-0) of their own to take their first lead of the game (43-41) on a junior guard Brandon Woodhead (Lincoln, NE) jumper at 7:57. Woodhead finished with a game high 15 points. The lead would then change multiple times until Hicks hit a jumper with 25 second left in the game to win it for Chicago. Hicks finished with 12 points. The Spartans shot just 29.6 percent (8-29) from the field in the second half.
