MEN'S BASKETBALL—2005-06

The Spartans fall to 1-1 in the University Athletic Association and 9-4 overall. They will host Washington University (MO) in another UAA match-up on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Chicago meanwhile improves 1-1 and 8-5 on the year.

Case made just five shots in the first 20 minutes, going 5-of-33 from the field (15.2%) as they trailed 36-18 at the half. Chicago connected on 16-of-31 for 51.6 percent and out-rebounded the Spartans 26-20 in the first period. Junior guard Jesse Meyer (Omaha, NE) hit 3-of-5 three pointers for nine points to pace the Maroons. Meyer finished with a game-high 16 points.

The Spartans battled back in the second half and cut Chicago’s lead to eight (50-58) with just under a minute (56.5) to play. That was as close as Case would get however with the Maroons making their free throws down the stretch. Senior guard Carson Oren scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half. Case improved on their shooting in the last 20 minutes, making 16-of-35 shots from the field (45.7%).

Case junior guard Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH) added seven rebounds and eight points and Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) added 10 points for the Spartans. The Maroons had two players record double-doubles as senior forward Jason Hicks (Glendale, WI) had 12 points and 12 rebounds and junior guard Brandon Woodhead (Lincoln, NE) finished with 10 points and 11 assists.
