CASE 91, ALFRED 86...
CLEVELAND, OH (December 30, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University senior guard Richard Mullen-pictured (Columbus, OH) scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists this afternoon as the Spartans topped Alfred University (NY) 91-86 in the consolation game of the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament (presented by the InterContinental Hotel & Conference Center).
Case improves to 7-2 on the season while Alfred falls to 5-5. The Spartans will host Oberlin College on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
Case shot 51.5 percent (17-33) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-13) from three point land in the first half to take a 48-36 lead into the intermission. Mullen connected on five of seven from behind the arc himself, scoring 15 points in the first 20 minutes. He finished the game six of eight in three pointers. Alfred shot just 34.2 percent and was out rebounded by Case 26-18 in the half.
Case continued to shoot well in the second half, hitting 11 of their 23 attempts from the floor including five of six from behind the three point arc. Case guard Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH) had all 12 of his points in the second half to lead the Spartans. Case led by as many as 18 points, but poor free throw shooting and turnovers allowed Alfred to sneak into the game as they led by only two points, 81-79, with 2:09 remaining in the game. Senior guard Quentin Bryant (Buffalo, NY) had 17 second half points (20 for the game) for the Scots, but Alfred continued to struggle from the floor shooting just 31.7% in the second half.
Case had five players in double figures with Mullen and senior forward Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) leading the way with 18 points each. Sophomore center Mason Conrad (Tarpoon Springs, FL) added 17 points and senior guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) had 15 points along with Cannan’s 12.
