ALMA 74, CASE 73 ...
CLEVELAND, OH (December 29, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University’s (6-2) Carson Oren - pictured (South Bend, IN) recorded a double-double, his sixth of the year, as the Spartans fell 74-73 to the Alma College Scots (6-3) in game two of the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament (presented by the InterContinental Hotel & Conference Center) at the Veale Center. Oren had a team high 21 points and 10 rebounds.
After senior guard Richard Mullen (Columbus, OH) hit a three-pointer with 9.5 seconds left on the clock to give the Spartans a 73-72 advantage, Alma sophomore guard Mike Murphy (Hemlock, MI) drained a jumped shot at the buzzer to earn the Scots a spot in the championship game tomorrow.
Alma will face Denison, who defeated Alfred University 79-68 in game one, in the Veale Center at 4:00 p.m. Case will face Alfred at 2:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
Alma jumped out to a 15-1 lead in the first five minutes (14:20) of the game, connecting on three of four three-point attempts. They finished the first half eight of 16 from behind the arc. Case battled back from their second 14-point deficit of the half (23-9 at 9:01) to outscore the Scots 25-17 and trailed by just six, 40-34, at the intermission. Senior guard Greg Nelson (Manistique, MI) had 11 points in the first 20 minutes for Alma and Case sophomore center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL) had six points and eight rebounds. Mason ended the night with a double-double (10 points & 10 rebounds) and Nelson led all scorers in the game with 22 points.
The lead would change three times in the second half with Case taking their first one of the game, 48-46, at the 15:08 mark as Oren kept the Spartans in it with 13 points in the last 20 minutes. Also scoring in double-digits for Case was Mullen with 13 points. Alma sophomore forward Cory Massey (Grand Rapids, MI) was his team’s second highest scorer with 15. The Scots finished the game a whopping 13 of 28 from behind the arc.
