NYU 86, CASE 78 ...
NEW YORK, NY (February 18, 2005) - The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team dropped their ninth straight tonight in New York City 86-78 to New York University. The Spartans fall to 5-17 overall and 1-10 in the University Athletic Association. The Violets improve to 14-9 and 4-8.
Case freshman guard Jeremy Sallee (Hamilton, OH) scored a career and game high 23 points. Sallee was 8 of 14 from the field (2 of 2 from behind the arc) and 5 of 5 from the line. Spartan junior guard Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) and freshman center Conrad Mason (Tarpon Springs, FL) added 13 points a piece.
New York hit the boards in the first half, out rebounding Case 21-14 (52-44 in the game). The Violets, who led 44-40 at the half, shot 48.6 percent (17-35) from the field in the first half compared to the Spartan's 50.0 percent (14-28).
The Spartans declined in the shooting department in the second half, only connecting on 15 of 39 (38.5%). Conrad Mason scored all 13 of his points in the last 20 minutes. Case had it within two, 60-58 with 11:21 left, but New York pulled away to snap a three game losing streak.
NYU had five players score in double digits led by senior center Jeff Gilkerson's (Clarks Summit, PA) 22. Gilkerson added a game high 10 rebounds.
The Spartans travel to Boston tomorrow and face Brandeis University Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
