ROCHESTER 84, CASE 50 ...
ROCHESTER, NY (February 6, 2005) - The Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team suffered their sixth straight loss today in an 84-50 defeat at the hands of the University of Rochester, the top team in the University Athletic Association. Rochester leads the UAA in scoring defense and it showed as the Yellow Jackets (17-3, 8-1 UAA) held the Spartans (4-14, 1-7 UAA) to just 50 total points.
Case never led in the contest as the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 43-21 lead at halftime. Rochester used a 15-34 (44.1%) first half shooting percentage, including making 5 of 11 three point attempts to put the Spartans down early. Case was 9-29 (31.0%) from the field in the first period and finished with a 35.7% percentage in the game. The Yellow Jackets committed just one turnover in the first period and only seven total in the game while Case had six turnovers in the first half and 11 for the game.
The second half was more of the same for Rochester as they increased their lead to as high as 35 points. The Yellow Jackets finished with four players with double figures in scoring, led by Seth Hauben with game highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action. Case was led by sophomore guard Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH) with a team high 12 points and six rebounds.
Rochester out-rebounded the Spartans 43 to 30 in the game and dished out 19 assists compared to only six for Case. Case standout forward Carson Oren (South Bend, IN), the leading scorer in the UAA, played only 12 minutes in the game, scoring just five points in the contest.
Case will return to action this weekend when they will host the University of Chicago for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off in the Veale Center.
