CARNEGIE MEELON 83, CASE 81 ...
PITTSBURGH, PA (February 4, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University junior forward Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) led four Spartans players in double digits tonight with 29 points as Case fell on the road 83-81 to Carnegie Mellon University in University Athletic Association action. Oren, who finished the night 10 of 16 from the field, also grabbed a team high 10 rebounds.
Case freshman guard Jeremy Sallee (Hamilton, OH) added nine points, three assists, and four steals. The Spartans, who travel to the University of Rochester Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. game, fall to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the UAA. The Tartans improve to 13-4 and 5-2.
Carnegie Mellon built a 44-33 halftime lead via the shooting of Nate Maurer. Maurer connected on 6 of 13 in the first half for 16 points. He finished the game with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Case out rebounded the Tartans 21-19 (40-38 in the game) in the first 20 minutes, but turned the ball over 11 times (17 in the game).
The Spartans turn the tables on Carnegie Mellon in the second half, forcing them to turn the ball over 11 times (18 in the game). The Tartans led by 11, 70-59, with 9:18 left on the clock, but Case went on a 16-4 run to take over the lead 75-74 at the 3:59 mark. That was the last time the Spartans led as Carnegie Mellon snapped a two game losing streak.
Case junior guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) added 13 points, freshman center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Spring, FL) 11, and junior guard Richard Mullen (Dublin, OH) 10.
