CHICAGO 82, CASE 71 ...
CHICAGO, IL (January 16, 2005) - Despite 21 points from junior guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH), the visiting Case Western Reserve Spartans were defeated by the University of Chicago 82-71 this afternoon. The loss moves Case to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Maroons remain undefeated in the UAA at 3-0 and 7-7 overall.
The first-half was a see-saw battle with Chicago holding a narrow 37-36 lead at the 3:48 mark. The Maroons then used an 8-0 run to close out the first-half and take a nine point lead, 45-36, into the locker room. Freshman center Mason Conrad (Tarpon Springs, FL) led Case in the first period with 11 points while Chicago surged to the lead behind Jesse Meyer's 16 points, including four three-pointers.
The Spartans battled back in the second-half, knotting the score at 56-56 with 10:39 remaining in the game. However a 20-6 spurt by the Maroons stretched the lead to 16 with just 3:06 left on the clock. The lead proved to be insurmountable as Chicago held off a late Case charge to claim the 82-71 victory. Chicago has been tough against Case in recent years with today's Maroon victory marking 15 straight Chicago wins over Case.
Conrad finished the game with 15 points and seven rebounds with senior Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) adding 19 points along with seven rebounds for Case. Chicago, who shot 50% from the field, and 47.8% (11-23) from three-point range, was led by Meyer who had 20 points. The Spartans finished the game with a 43.8% field goal percentage while Chicago out-rebounded Case 39-31 in the contest.
Case will be at home next weekend as Brandeis visits on Friday night and New York University comes to town for a Sunday afternoon game.
