CASE 83, OBERLIN 72 ...
OBERLIN, OH (January 5, 2005) - Behind Carson Oren's (South Bend, IN) 27 points and eight rebounds, Case Western Reserve held on to down Oberlin College 83-72 this evening in Oberlin, Ohio. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Spartans (3-7), while the Yeomen (1-11) stretch their losing streak to nine in a row.
Oberlin made it quite a game and went down fighting to the end behind a team-high 27 points from Matthew Godwin. The Yeomen cut a Case lead, which was as high as 19 early in the second half, to just two points, 74-72, on a Godwin three-pointer with 2:34 remaining. However that was as close as Oberlin would get with Case scoring the final nine points, including five from Oren. Case used a 24-11 run over the final 9:25 of the first half to take a commanding 44-29 into halftime. The Spartans were led in the first-half by Oren with 14 points and Richard Mullen (Columbus, OH), who scored all of his 11 in the first period. Case used a 32-22 first-half edge in rebounding to take the early lead.
Junior guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) added 21 points and six rebounds to help lead the Spartans this evening. Case out-rebounded the Yeomen 53-43 in the game and held on to the victory despite turning to ball over 17 times compared to Oberlin's 10 giveaways. The Yeomen fired up 56 three-point attempts, making just 14 for a 25% percentage, while Case took just 21 shots from behind the arc, hitting 8 of their attempts (38.1%).
Case will look to continue their winning ways this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they host Emory University (6-2) in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams.
